Subject: Social Science- American Government

Standard(s): California Content Standard 12.6.4, 12.6.1, 12.2.4, 12.3.1, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.11-12.6

Objective: SWBAT create a political party, nominate a presidential candidate, and run a political campaign based on their political party's views on various issues.

This is a 4-5 day lesson in which students get into groups (of at least 4) and create a political party.  They research political views (requires computer lab time), nominate a candidate (fictional or real), and then run a political campaign to win the election.    Students should have a decent understanding of political parties, party platforms and basic knowledge of social issues before starting this project.

  1. Political Party Statement of Purpose
  2. Campaign Posters
  3. Speeches
  4. Election Day

Some of your students may be shy and will want to show a prerecorded speech for the campaign speech portion of this project.  I say let them!  Sometimes it turns out better than the real thing.
