Shakespearean Insults (TED-Ed)

Posted Eureka Lessons English, Grade 11-12, Grade 9-10, Lessons, Literature

Want to get students talking about Shakespeare?  Begin your class by asking them if they playfully "trash talk" with their friends.  If so, what is the context and what are some of the things they say?  Transition: Did you know a lot of the greatest insults and trash talking originated from Shakespeare?  Example: back in the day, calling someone a "fishmonger" was the equivalent of calling them an ODB (old dirty bastard) or a shameless pimp.  Shakespearean insults are actually clever and "oooooohhhhh" worthy; you need only read contextual clues to understand and enjoy them.  Visit the Ted-Ed for follow up resources on this video.
